Let no debt remain outstanding,

except the continuing debt to love one another,

for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

The commandments,

"You shall not commit adultery,"

"You shall not murder,"

"You shall not steal,"

"You shall not covet,"

and whatever other command there may be,

are summed up in this one command,

"Love your neighbor as yourself."

Love does no harm to a neighbor.

Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

(Romans 13:8-10)

This is some of the most radical news in the New Testament.

Because love of neighbor is now the new command above all commands,

the quintessential obedient Jew,

uses the phrase "whatever other command there may be"

to describe the 10 commandments!

And he simply says, they are all summed up in one new idea:

The main way we express our love for God

is to love our neighbor as ourself.

That is it.

All I can think of when I read it is,

If only the church really believed this ...

If only I really believed this ...

And it makes me want to ask ...

Do you believe it?
