Featured: To set the whole thing trembling ...

I love me some Freddy Buechner, a Presbyterian pastor with a knack for turning a phrase. The smallest acts of kindness, even circumscribed within our own families, can, as Buechner says, "set the whole thing trembling." Kindness can change the world. Listen to how Buechner puts it: "Humanity is like an enormous spider web, so […]

A great old dog ...

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person" — Andy Rooney Our 15-year old chocolate lab, Stella, is in her final days. It is a gentle time in our home--ear scratches and belly rubs, extra treats, assurance of our love for her, and lots of reminiscing. I remember the day she stole […]

The Power of Doing Nothing in a Chaotic World

I am revisiting Jenny Odell's fascinating book, How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy. Originally published in 2019, her work feels more urgent today than it did a mere six years ago. Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to […]

A mental breath of fresh air.

There is sometimes a perception that because I have been a pastor for the past 20 years and have been counseling at least as long, that I have my whole life together.

But honestly, that’s not always the case.

I struggle with many of the same things that you do, and that’s one of the reasons I write Alice at Dawn. So that we can tackle those questions together.
