Anyone else give up tending to their flower gardens about now?

The heat and humidity, the triumphant weeds, the mosquitos out for blood. All my springtime energy has faded and my new mantra is, "I'll work on that next spring ..."

I feel kinda' bad about my attitude, though.

My flowers are out there doing their very best to remain showy. They don't know they are past their prime. They only have one job -- Bloom! Bloom! Bloom!

I whisper to them from my screened-in porch, "It's ok to go to seed early, ladies. You were fantastic this year in all your well-watered glory. Great job blooming like a bunch of bosses. I did my darndest to support you, but I am gardened out. You are gonna' have to fend for yourself until April, ok?"

When I post this, I think it is going to be in the 70's here in Iowa. Almost unheard of for August. But mark my words, as soon as the first day of school nears, the temps will soar again.

So, if you drive by my home, say a prayer for my flowers, just out there trying their best.

They're on their own now.
